About Quaint Quilts

Histroy of the quilt.
As far back as the fourteenth century records of quilting used as a technique in the making of bedding and quilted clothing can be traced. From the eighteenth century onwards there are many surviving examples of patchwork quilts. The earlier ones were made soley for utilitarian purposes, however, from 1800, quilts were being made by more affluent families for decorativeness and beauty. After 1820, the introduction of roller printing enabled mass production of printed cottons and due to more accessibility and affordability of materials, quilt making soared.

At the beginning of the twentieth century patchwork and quilting almost died out. The art was only confined to the economically hard pressed industrial areas of Wales and Northern England. During and after the second world war with an ever increasing move to use ready made clothes and bedding, patchwork and quilting became less important as sources of income or even as hobbies.

However, due to the formation of quilter’s guilds worldwide and enough women who remembered the old skills to pass their heritage to a younger generation, the patchwork quilt as a craft has survived and has captured the imagination and interest of thousands of people.

To quote Schnuppe von Ginner 1988 “Above and beyond all utility, patchwork quilts serve a people’s need for decoration and give a free reign to their creative talents ”.

About Us.
We have been making patchwork quilts for over fifteen years. mainly for family and friends. However, we decided to combine our talents and ability to create a product that others can enjoy now and their future generations in years to come. Our main aim is to produce quality quilts. To this end each quilt is treated as a separated project, being designed and constructed individually making each quilt unique and a heirloom. Each quilt is a work of art that can never be exactly repeated. The patterns we have used come from the North American, Amish and traditional English cottage designs.

However, having become very interested in the history of Welsh quilts. We would like to try to revive the bold geometric patterns of Welsh patchwork of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Fewer and fewer original Welsh quilts are now found, most have been accidentally overlooked and thrown away, as today’s generation do not realise the true historical value of Welsh quilts and its important position in Welsh culture. Therefore, we would like to try to revive the interest in Welsh quilt making by replicating the patchwork designs, either in flannels or to accommodate today’s preferences, by making them from today’s materials and colours.

Every quilt is machined pieced and hand quilted.
The wadding can be either 2oz, 4oz, or 6oz, depending on the thickness required.

All our quilts have a coordinating patterned backing.

By using a stab stitch method of quilting where no quilting stitches are visible on top, the effect of the patchwork is not spoiled. However, the quilting stitches are visibles on the back, giving the customer a reversible quilt with a beautiful quilted back.

Our standard quilt sizes are as follows:-

Single: 60” x 92”
Double: 80” x 96”
King Size: 102 ” x 108”

However, we will accommodate any size as we realise that beds of today are of varying heights.

The pictures on this web site are examples of quilt patterns that have been made in the past to give an idea of colours and patterns available. Size, Colour and pattern can be chosen to suit your bedroom decor and we welcome any swatches of material to match for colour. We feel that it is very important to work closely with all our customers on discussing their quilt. We strive to give one hundred percent satisfaction so that each of our quilts will enhance a bedroom now and also be a precious heirloom of the future.
